Graphic Novels for Elementary Students
by Salamah Mullen

The library at Northern Parkway Elementary School has expanded its graphic novel section this school year. Over 40 titles have been added giving students more of a choice when it comes to selecting a graphic novel. Graphic novels powerfully attract kids and motivate them to read. One of our students had been waiting for the book Amulet, Book Two: The Storekeeper’s Curse by Kazu Kibuishi (title featured below) When it finally arrived, another student in the class spied it on the shelf first and she checked it out. The first student was sad about the situation because he had his heart set on reading Amulet. The second student saw his sadness and offered to give him the book. In response to her offer, the first student replied, “That’s okay. I know you really wanted to read it too. I can wait a little longer for a good book.” So it can be argued that graphic novels allow students to highlight their passion for books while at the same time show kindness to each other. Here are some of the titles your child in grades 3-5 should check out this summer.
